2019 - Current The study of the sonnet: Italian "models" and the poetry of Jorge de Sena

Description: The sonnet model in Portugal has always been the Petrarchan style and it was in this model that poetic renewal took place, still in the context of modern lyrical renewal, with Nobre, Pessanha, Mario de Sá-Carneiro. On the other hand, the Shakespearean model was rarely composed, which Jorge de Sena considers and restructures, as well as the Italian model, as can be seen in Evidências (1951), a work in which the author brings together 21 of his sonnets. Initially, we propose to look at Sena's Poesia Completa, in order to investigate his affection for this type of composition and his almost obsession with significantly transforming a classic structure par excellence. To do this, it will also be necessary to study the origin of the sonnet, in 12th century Italy, and its development in the so-called Petrarchan and Shakespearean sonnets in the classicist context. dialogues.

On the one hand, we consider poets that are familiar to us, such as Cesário Verde, António Nobre and Camilo Pessanha; on the other, poets to whose works we dedicate sparse and specific studies, such as Fernando Pessoa, Manuel Bandeira, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, especially based on the relationship established between the sayable and the visible, at the level of language and the Drummondian perspective that ?we are the Moderns / provisional, a-historical...?
