2022 - Current Have some works already been seen and approved?: printing and censorship of theater in Portugal in the 16th century

Description: As an extension of my previous project - "My Book, What Are You Waiting For?": a history of the "Copyright of All Works by Gil Vicente" - in which I discussed what the 1562 Copyright has to tell us about its organization, editing, publication and reading, in search of the construction of a history of the Book to which Gil Vicente dedicated the last years of his life, I propose in this new project - "Have some works [...] been seen and approved?": printing and censorship of theater in Portugal in the 16th century - to investigate the intrinsic and always tense relationship between inquisitorial censorship and the printing of books in Portugal in the 16th century, having as its central corpus the Copyright of 1562, an example of survival of censorship. Gil Vicente's work will be joined as testimonies of the resistance strategies of printers and artists to the inquisitorial activity by a large series of texts and playwrights, some already mentioned above, who persisted and insisted on surviving, whether through techniques developed by publishers and booksellers, or through creative artifices implemented by playwrights.
